For more than four decades, The Mill Company has created aesthetically pleasing, functional spaces that are both easy to live in and enduring in design. The firm’s work has always balanced beauty with practicality — flexible, timeless, and shaped by the way people truly live.
Founded in Virginia and named for the restoration of an 18th-century gristmill, The Mill Company built its reputation designing and renovating private residences, as well as select commercial and ecclesiastical spaces, throughout the country.
From the beginning, our guiding principle was simple: every home should reflect its owners — not its designer.
Rather than following trends or repeating a “signature look,” The Mill Company’s interiors were tailored to each client’s personality, architecture, and lifestyle, then elevated through thoughtful detail and enduring materials. The result was design that felt authentic, individual, and timeless — beautiful spaces that never went out of style.
Over the decades, our work has ranged from historic restorations and architectural interior planning to comprehensive residential renovations and new custom homes. Each project reflected the same attention to proportion, light, and flow — creating environments that felt seamless, practical, and inviting.
While The Mill Company now works primarily with longtime clients and select referrals, our dedication to excellence and personal service remains unchanged.
Our work has always extended far beyond furnishings and finishes. We specialize in the architectural dimension of interior design — shaping how spaces function, sound, and feel.
Each project considers lighting, acoustics, spatial organization, mechanical systems, and integration of technology as part of the overall design concept. This holistic approach ensures that every interior is as functional and comfortable as it is beautiful.
That philosophy continues to guide us today, informing every project we take on, no matter how large or small.
The Mill Company endures as a design practice defined by integrity, craftsmanship, and timeless design — creating spaces that feel as good to live in as they are to look at.
